What to Expect
A guided, all-levels movement workshop combining Bharatanatyam foundations, live Carnatic music, storytelling, and structured improvisation.
Take Home
Leave with new tools for storytelling through movement, stronger musical intuition, and a deeper connection to how your body responds to rhythm and live sound.
About the Workshop
Join a special afternoon of movement, rhythm, storytelling, and live music in San Francisco. This all-levels adult workshop is rooted in the Bharatanatyam framework, but the focus is on exploration rather than performance. Participants will work with Bharatanatyam movement, live music, and structured improvisation across a range of musical prompts.
Think of it as a movement mixtape and a chance to listen, respond, experiment, and discover how story and intention can shape the way you move.
The Experience
You’ll explore:
And perhaps the best part: getting to move with live music in the room.
What to Expect
A guided, all-levels movement workshop combining Bharatanatyam foundations, live Carnatic music, storytelling, and structured improvisation.
Who Is This For?
Everyone! While having some prior Indian dance experience is helpful, it is absolutely not required. No advanced dance experience is required. Come ready to move, listen, explore, and play.

Nadhi Thekkek is an artistic director, choreographer, and dancer who creates deeply layered Bharatanatyam and experimental movement works. Based in the Bay Area, her choreography uses archival records, oral histories, and community interviews to examine labor, belonging, and identity through the lens of diasporic South Asian women. Her acclaimed touring productions include Broken Seeds Still Grow and the Isadora Duncan Award-nominated Rogue Gestures/Foreign Bodies.
Nadhi has performed at prestigious global venues from NYC’s La Mama to London’s Southbank Centre, and her work was recently commissioned by the Oakland Ballet Company. She trains continuously under Guru Sri. A. Lakshmanaswamy in Chennai, India, and uniquely brings an investigative lens to her art, holding a PhD in Bioengineering from Rice University.

Sindhu Natarajan is a Bay Area vocalist and composer with deep roots in Carnatic music. She has performed across the Bay Area for more than 15 years and has collaborated with South Asian dance companies and choreographers across the U.S. Her independent compositions blend Carnatic traditions with contemporary musical influences.

Aditya Iswara is trained in Mridangam, Kanjira, Carnatic violin, Carnatic music, and Bharatanatyam. He has performed as an accompanist for music and dance across the country and brings a strong rhythmic and interdisciplinary perspective to the workshop.
Smuin Center for Dance is the San Francisco home of Smuin Contemporary Ballet and a hub for dance training, rehearsals, classes, and community programming.
