About This Event
ENCOUNTER is a provocative work from Sindhoor Natya that brings together physical theater, dance, and powerful storytelling.
Inspired by Magsaysay Award-winning writer Mahasweta Devi’s work, the performance follows Dopdi, an Indigenous woman whose defiance in the face of injustice becomes a compelling story of courage, resilience, and human dignity.
Choreographed and directed by Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda, with a script by S.M. Raju and Aparna Sindhoor, the production features an original score by National Award-winning composer Isaac Thomas Kottukapally.
Described by The Gazette, Montreal as “A dynamic response to a broken world,” ENCOUNTER is for audiences drawn to powerful storytelling, expressive movement, and performance that stays with you.

Raju, Navarasa creates bold, multilayered theatrical works that weave together Bharatanatyam dance, Kalari martial arts, music, and storytelling. As the leading U.S. institution for Kalari and Mysore-style Bharatanatyam, Navarasa is also behind Dance For Everyone, a free weekly dance and martial arts program serving 200+ students across India and the U.S.
Rooted in the belief that art is a necessity for all, Navarasa uses performance to spark social awareness and build a more compassionate, just world.

@dancemissiontheaterDance Mission Theater is a longtime independent performance and dance space in San Francisco’s Mission District, known for presenting diverse artists, cultural traditions, and socially engaged work.
The intimate theater is located directly across from the 24th Street Mission BART station, making it easy to reach by public transit. The second-floor venue is accessible by elevator or stairs.
